UPMC initiated a renovation to Operating Room 10 and 12 in order to upgrade the suites with the latest high tech equipment, finishes, and organizational layout. The project included the incorporation of a CT Scanner and Angiography OR Tables, new control rooms for equipment, epoxy terrazzo floorings and the integration of new medical gas and equipment booms, HVAC and electrical upgrades.
Close coordination between various equipment suppliers made coordination especially critical in this project. All of the equipment support connections, utility connections, and electrical and data feeds were concealed in the ceilings and walls. These termination points had to be correct in order to meet the schedule and preclude extensive rework with equipment delivery.
The logistics of completing a project of this complexity white maintaining the daily operations within a surgery suite was magnified by being adjacent to two existing suites which were not taken out of operation during the course of our work. The project had to be phased to first create new scrub sinks and access to the adjacent OR's and secondly, install the Infectious Control Barriers (ICRA Containment) to accommodate the remaining work.
As the new OR's were a complete renovation including wholesale demolition, space expansion, and totally new utility services, the renovations were completed during off hours. This required close coordination of material deliveries and manpower. Most especially materials were double handled being delivered to our home office and loaded out to the project only when needed. No laydown area for material was available onsite, or within the 3,000sf renovation space.

| Project Info: |
Beginning in 2001, the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh initiated a plan to improve the facilities and services at its various locations throughout the Pittsburgh area. Part of this comprehensive improvement program included the focal point of the Pittsburgh Library system, the main Carnegie Library located in the Oakland section of Pittsburgh.
It was the desire of the administration and board of the Carnegie Library, to provide a user friendly environment to individuals seeking to more easily experience the many benefits available through library resources. Direction was given to the design and construction teams to transform the space and change the image of the conventional institutional type library from an old and dusty, quiet and reserved facility, to an open, vital, up-te-date, and interactive facility that is used by a wide range of people.
Part of the renovation project included construction of an exterior area known as the Bamboo Room and exterior deck. This feature includes an indoor and outdoor reading deck which provides users with areas both inside and outside of the building based on personal preference and weather conditions. The exterior deck consists of an exotic wood deck constructed on a structural steel frame surrounded by a stainless steel guardrail and large bamboo plants. The interior space is also positioned on a structural steel frame and surrounded by curtainwall and hardwood interiors. This area serves as an interconnecting corridor and bridge between the two wings of the library.
Also included as part of the courtyard construction was a new elevator shaft which provides new vertical circulation between the main library areas and the upper floors. Again, constructing this shaft, including the structural underpinning in a normally inaccessible area, provided many challenges to the construction team.
Word of the success of the project spread quickly and the attendance at the grand opening was much larger than anticipated. The renovation of the library and improvements completed under this project have attracted new library customers and increased library membership. In just the first three months of operation, following the reopening, the library allocated $350,000 toward the purchase of new books to serve the increased demand for library materials and the increase in usage by library patrons. |

glass and glazing with canopy entrances to offset the mass of the
